Monologue Madness was a series of short presentations - two to five minutes each - by a troupe of 14 actors. The monologues covered the gamut of stand-up comedy to serious dramatic presentations. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, and every performance was meritorious in it's own way. I arrived ten minutes before curtain up and the stage was already decorated with actors. One particularly conspicuous presence was a gaily decorated female clown positioned squarely in the center of the stage. Less obvious - on stage left- was the two some of Kristin Carter and Charity Bess chatting. Or were they? I found the highly animated stream of facial expressions by Kristin - a constant dance of smiles, nods and bouncing eyebrows - to be absolutely mesmerizing. I kept wondering, "Is that really a coincidental conversation or part of the act?" In any event, it kept me entertained till the performances started. I've recently been evaluating comedy clubs, where the performances consist exclusively of the stand-up genre. I found the diversity of Monologue Madness to be refreshing and conducive to a more fulfilling entertainment experience. As I said, I thought that every presentation was worthwhile, but - frankly - it seemed to me that the girls carried the evening. I felt that Kristin Carter and Cassandra Cooke's dramatic presentations were the perfect juxtaposition with the comedy of Claysey Everett. Claysey reminds me a bit of Jackie Gleason in his early days. I'm having conflict writing a review because I think this evening should be evaluated in its entirety and singling out individual performances seems to miss the point. Monologue Madness was presented July 8th at The Royal
Theatre. |
